A major public-safety project for Kilmacthomas has moved a step closer, with Waterford City and County Council confirming that contracts have been signed for a new fire station serving the local area.
According to Waterford City and County Council, Mayor of Waterford City and County Cllr. Seamus Ryan signed contracts with Conor Phelan of Conor Phelan Construction for the new Kilmacthomas Fire Station. The project will see a single-storey station built in the townland of Graigueshoneen, approximately one kilometre from Kilmacthomas.
The new facility is planned to include two appliance bays, welfare facilities for fire personnel and associated site works. The council has also said the landscaping will include a pollinator garden with wildflower grass, supporting local biodiversity as part of the development.
The location is significant because of its proximity to the N25, which the council says will help fire crews respond quickly and effectively across the surrounding area. The new station is expected to provide modern operational space for emergency-service personnel and strengthen long-term emergency response capacity in and around Kilmacthomas.
The contract for the new building is valued at €2.75 million and is funded by the Department of Housing, Heritage and Local Government. Further details are available in the official council announcement.
Local residents will welcome the progress on a project that is directly connected to community safety, emergency readiness and the resilience of services across the wider area.
